Fortnite: Battle Royale

Fortnite: Battle Royale had some struggles last week as scheduled downtime for maintenance turned into an unexpected, extended downtime followed by a set of bugs that both affected social features and gameplay, but the popular battle royale game has stabilized again by this point. Not only that, but buried inside one of those patches seems to be a brand-new game mode for anyone looking to shake up the standard 100-person deathmatch gameplay: Sniper Shootout, available now until February 2.

Sniper Shootout is what it sounds like: Fortnite: Battle Royale but with a whole ton of sniper rifles. All weapon drops have been replaced with snipers save a few revolvers sprinkled in to keep close-quarters combat from becoming a slapstick routine of close-up scoping. I jumped into a game and got a blue sniper in the first house I went to and was blown out of the water almost immediately afterward. Sniper rifles, generally speaking, are a high-skill weapon, and that makes Sniper Shootout a high-skill mode. Expect to get killed a lot, or if you're good, expect to kill a lot.

I'll be interested to see how this affects gameplay: I assume it will mean a whole lot less action in the middle of the safe zone and a whole lot more around the periphery, as players try to stay out of the open and try to use the storm as a way of ensuring that they won't get shot from behind. Open areas will become death traps and player-built forts could become more important as players seek a way to get maximum cover while still allowing them a way to shoot at enemies. Lucky players that land closer to the safe zone could get an even bigger advantage than usual if they manage to build out easily-defensible positions because enemies won't have as many options for closing the distance and countering a camping strategy.

Epic has talked before about how a steady stream of changes, new items and limited-time events is crucial to its strategy for Fortnite going forward as a way of keeping the free-to-play game feeling dynamic. In the past, we've seen a silenced pistol and an insane 50 vs. 50 mode, as well as the usual suite of rotating cosmetics and holiday events. That's at the same time as a large-scale technical streamlining and massive map rework, of course. At some point, we're going to have to talk about Fortnite without comparing it to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, but it's constant evolution and iteration like this that could give Fortnite an edge in what's currently a two-game faceoff. PUBG is a great game, but Epic's inside-out fluency in Unreal Engine appears to have given it a game with a much easier development pipeline.

Fortnite Battle Royale introduserer stadig nye spillmoduser. Bilde: Epic Games

Much like what we saw with MOBAs years ago, battle royale-style games are all the rage thanks to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' domination of Steam. Fortnite beat PUBG to consoles and is available as a free-to-play title, and it introduces building mechanics to the mix that you don't get with PUBG. Like PUBG developer Bluehole, Epic has enjoyed an incredible level of success, with more than 40 million players spread across Fortnite: Battle Royale and the PvE Survive the World component.

Even more standalone battle royale games are undoubtedly on the way, but Fortnite won't be the only existing title to integrate the mode in some fashion. Grand Theft Auto V has already done so in modest fashion with Motor Wars mode, but there are a variety of other games--both those already playable and some that are still in development--that we think could also make interesting use of the concept. In the video above, we run down five games that should consider putting their own spin on battle royale in 2018.

There was some controversy surrounding Fortnite last year, as PUBG's developer made it known that it was less than pleased with "the similarities between the battle royale mode in Epic Games' newly revealed Fortnite and PUBG." The complaint is more complicated than it appears on the surface, as PUBG uses Unreal Engine 4, which is built by Fortnite maker Epic Games.PUBG's developer seemingly threatened legal action, though nothing has come of that yet--at least publicly.

Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene, who is credited with having established the genre as a modder, said last year, "I just feel that Fortnite: Battle Royale is a bit lazy to me. They could have had a great game because Fortnite is amazing and they could have put some unique, interesting building [systems] in there, almost like a tower defense Battle Royale, but they just didn't. But what can you do? It's going to happen. It's the nature of business I guess."

Whether upcoming battle royale modes and games put enough of a spin on the formula to satisfy Greene remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: They are coming.

Sniper Shootout privilegia el combate a distancia

TagsFortniteFortnite Battle RoyaleEpic Games

Sigue informado, en LEVEL UP.

TODO alt text

Few things are more divisive in shooter games than sniping. You either love taking a perfect shot from all the way across the map, or you hate getting your noggin popped by somebody you never even see. Depending on which camp you're in, Fortnite: Battle Royale's latest limited-time mode is either long-range bliss or an intensive form of exposure therapy: welcome to Sniper Shootout.

Pick this mode and you'll be dropped into a nightmare world where sniper rifles (bolt-action or semi-automatic) and revolvers are the only guns. Can you tell I'm awful with both of those weapon types? Consumable items like the new health-and-shield-maxing Chug Jug still spawn as normal so you can heal back up after some bastard on a mountain peak roughly two states away misjudges their shot and just puts a hole in your chest instead of your head.

Yes, I'm salty, but I'm also going to keep playing this mode because I desperately need sniping practice for shooter games in general (Fortnite: Battle Royale is free, so you might consider doing the same even if you haven't tried it yet). I'm getting a feel for bullet drop, now I just need to work on leading my targets so I can hit people who aren't standing still as they scroll through build mode. Speaking of building, the lack of explosive weapons and need for good vantage points make Sniper Shootout a very fort-friendly mode, too. As long as I don't shoot you.

Like all of Fortnite: Battle Royale's limited-time modes, Sniper Shootout is playable only in squad mode. You can disable the automatic team-filling option if you don't have any buddies to play with and you're tired of being matched up with teammates who never try to revive you even if you're holding your guts in right next to them (yep, still salty over here). You'll be at a disadvantage against squads that actually work together, but at least you won't have to wait for your character to bleed out to make sure you get your rightfully earned challenge progress.

Sniper Shootout will end on Friday, February 2. Make sure you check out all the neat new spots on the updated Fortnite: Battle Royale map while you're building towers everywhere.

Following some server issues that cropped up last week, Epic Games has once again brought something new for players to do in Fortnite. The Battle Royale portion of the game has announced a new limited-time mode for all players on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and it's available now.

Sniper Shootout is now live, and as you can probably guess, it's a sniper rifle-centric experience. All weapons on the map have been replaced by sniper rifles, though you'll also find some revolvers to make short-range encounters less of the nightmare they'd be with snipers only. Consumables can also be found like normal, but grenades have been removed to ensure it's the aforementioned weapons (or melee attacks) that are involved in any kills.

This is the first instance of Sniper Shootout, so it remains to be seen if it'll become a regular part of the rotation. It should make the new city area introduced in the recent Fortnite map revampan especially popular drop zone, what with all the tall buildings.

You'll have only a few days to check out the mode, as it will rotate out on Friday, February 2. There's no word on what will be next, but other limited-time modes we've seen include those that focus on suppressed weapons or explosives. Another turned the game into a 50v50 affair, which I was particularly fond of.

A new Fortnite update was released last week, but it was accompanied by extended downtime due to an issue with the game's servers. Subsequently, players again found they wereunable to play or join up with friends, though Epic has since released a fix for the social/party issues. An additional, smallerFortnite patch was also deployed over the weekend to fix some other lingering bugs.

Fortnite Battle Royale Epic Games has announced a new, limited time, squad-based event known as the Sniper Shootout. It's pretty much what you'd expect, the focus being that only sniper rifles are allowed. Well, almost.

Since snipers are utterly useless in close-quarters engagement you'll also be allowed to have a pistol for those moments. Health items will also still spawn on the map but otherwise, this will be all out, long-range warfare.

The new mode is set to be here until February 2, so jump in while you can. If you haven't yet played Fortnite Battle Royale, you can grab it for free on Xbox, PC, and PS4.

Fortnite success has become Paragon's downfall as Epic announce it's pulling the plug

Epic Games has announced that Paragon will cease to exist in a matter of months (Picture: Metro/Epic Games) Epic Games has announced that Paragon will cease to exist in a matter of months.
The MOBA has been a cult success for the American developer following its free-to-play release back in 2016, with the game’s Beta version building a close relationship between core gamers and its devs.
More often than not the developers of the game listened directly to feedback and implemented it in patches and upgrades. Sadly for the Paragon, rumours of Fortnite killing the game appear to be true, as Epic recently posted a statement confirming that they were shutting the game down on April 26.
Posting a statement to the game’s page on its website, the developer explained it was with ‘heavy hearts’ that they have decided to ‘close down’ the game.

Launch trailer for Paragon Play Video Loaded: 0% Progress: 0% PlayMute Current Time 0:00 / Duration Time 0:00 Fullscreen Thanking players for all their commitment and loyalty, the statement read: ‘We truly appreciate everything you’ve put into Paragon.
We received many passionate ideas for where to take the game; the outpouring of thoughtful suggestions is another testament to this incredible community.
‘After careful consideration, and many difficult internal debates, we feel there isn’t a clear path for us to grow Paragon into a MOBA that retains enough players to be sustainable.’
Shouldering the blame themselves, the statement added: ‘We didn’t execute well enough to deliver on the promise of Paragon.
We have failed you — despite the team’s incredibly hard work — and we’re sorry.
‘To try to make this right, Epic is offering a full refund to every Paragon player for every purchase on any platform.
This refund will come directly from Epic rather than your platform provider.’

Fortnite success has become Paragon's downfall as Epic announce it's pulling the plug
Sadly for the Paragon, rumours of Fortnite killing the game appear to be true, as Epic recently posted a statement confirming that they were shutting the game down on April 26 (Picture: Epic Games) The statement signed off by saying thank you to everyone who played the game and embarked on the journey with the team behind it.
It also provided instructions on how to request a refund for any content bough on any of Paragon’s platforms.
The news comes shortly after Epic sparked concern that the huge popularity Fortnite has sparked would kill of its older and lesser-known brother.
The rumours and worry all started with a post from the official Epic Games account on Paragon’s Reddit page, which blamed slowdown on the success of its newer title:‘First, the team’s time is split between immediate improvements and longer-term efforts, so there’s less visible progress.
Second, a number of Paragon team members jumped onto Fortnite to help sustain the game as it has grown far larger than anything in Epic’s past.’
Well, that was pretty much the writing on the wall.
Paragon’s fate may also make fans of Unreal Tournament fear for the franchise’s latest instalment, which is currently being worked on, as key players from the development team for Unreal helped create Fortnite.
It would be unlikely that they’d be pulled from the (now hugely popular) game’s team.
But to ease Unreal fans fears, at the moment, there’s so far been no official rumblings of that.

After a disabled fan took to Reddit with his request, Epic Games sets out to make the new auto-run feature optional, no convincing needed.

Yesterday, a disabled, one-handed fan going by the nickname RAOBJSheff started a thread on the Fortnite Battle Royale subreddit about the addition of autorun, where he described how he plays the game with one hand.

“I lack the subtle movements a thumb can provide on the left stick so have to press it hard against my cheek bone to play. The new autorun feature means I constantly run and now fall out of buildings, off walls and die way more than normal.”

We hear that he loves the addition, but he’d also like the option to disable it. He actually plays with three other players that were born without or have lost a hand and because of the new autorun feature, they cannot play the game properly.

Playing a competitive multiplayer game like Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode with such a disadvantage as missing a hand and still finding a way to compete is quite a feat, and one worthy of praise. Apparently, Epic Games agreed, answering a mere two hours after he posted.

“You’re amazing! We’ll add an option to turn it off. Thank you for your support.”

Short, simple, to the point. They saw a dedicated fan in need and immediately offered to help. Sure, it’s probably not that hard to program a toggle into the game, but the fact that they responded so positively and without the usual flourish of typical PR talk is very refreshing.

The quick response was so well-received that the thread spilled into /r/all (which means even those not subscribed to the subreddit could see it on the Reddit homepage) and a few people who had never heard of Fornite before were considering buying it simply due to this interaction.

Fornite is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The latest update fixes a number of bugs and adds a new item called the Chug Jug.

Fortnite servers aren’t the problem tonight as players on PS4 have seen the return of queues.

This is actually down to a new PSN server outage, which is currently affecting core online services.

PS4 players have not been given an ETA on when the issues might be solved, with Epic providing the information they have, via their official Twitter account.

Epic have told fans that some players on PS4 may still be experiencing issues logging in and that they should be watching the official PSN Status website for updates.

Players are currently seeing a lot of Fortnite Waiting in Queueerror messages when trying to play on the PS4.

These pop up when the game becomes inaccessible for players online, which can be linked to several different issues.

Today saw the PlayStation Network go offline for the past few hours, leaving many unable to play top multiplayer titles.

While tonight’s issues are not part of problems with the Fortnite servers, there have been plenty of issues this week.

Epic Games confirmed that a big bump in their player count has been one of the main issues for server issues and party functions not working properly.

“Fortnite has had another big bump in player count this week and we were not prepared for it,” a message from the Epic support team reads.

“We have had a ton of issues and we are working hard to getting them sorted. We can't apologize to our players enough, and you can be sure that we are going to make this right.

“We can only ask you for your patience. We will likely be taking Fortnite offline for a while so we can work through this.

“We'll let you know when that will happen. We will update you soon on the next steps.”
